PSHE

Intent
At Moorcroft Wood Academy we follow a broad and balanced PSHE curriculum that encompasses learning around relationships, health and well-being, online safety and living in the wider world. We aim to give children the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to develop into well-rounded individuals and lead confident, healthy and independent lives. Children will develop the confidence to ask questions, challenge the information they are offered, draw on their own experience, express their views and opinions in a healthy manner and put into practice what they have learnt in their own lives. We believe PSHE should be an area of learning where self-esteem, positive attitudes and a child-centred approach are fostered and nurtured.
Curriculum / Progress Map
At Moorcroft Wood Academy, we use the SCARF Coram Life Education scheme to teach Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE).
Coram Life Education is the leading charity provider of relationships, health, wellbeing, and drugs education to children across the UK. The SCARF scheme is a whole-school approach that promotes positive behaviour, mental health, wellbeing, resilience and achievement. It meets all DfE requirements for statutory Relationships and Health Education and is mapped to the PSHE Association's Programme of Study.
SCARF is a spiral curriculum meaning that topics are revisited, and learning built upon, during each school year. Our whole-school SCARF topics run right through from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to the end of Key Stage 2.
| Autumn 1 | Me and My Relationships |
| Autumn 2 | Valuing Difference |
| Spring 1 | Keeping Safe |
| Spring 2 | Rights and Respect |
| Summer 1 | Being my Best |
| Summer 2 | Growing and Changing |
What is RHSE?
RHSE stands for Relationships, Health and Sex Education.
In a primary school context, it generally covers age-appropriate learning about:
- Relationships – friendships, family relationships, respect, kindness, boundaries and recognising unhealthy relationships.
- Health – physical health, mental wellbeing, hygiene, healthy lifestyles, puberty and growing up.
- Sex Education – age-appropriate learning about aspects of human reproduction and relationships, where this is included in the school's curriculum.
At Moorcroft Wood Academy, Relationships, Health and Sex Education (RHSE) forms an important part of our curriculum. It supports pupils to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to build positive and respectful relationships, understand and care for their physical and mental health, make informed choices and keep themselves and others safe.
Our RHSE curriculum is delivered through the SCARF programme and is taught in an age-appropriate and sensitive way, taking account of pupils' age, maturity and individual needs.
Sex Education in Year 6
In addition to the statutory Relationships Education and Health Education, pupils in Year 6 are taught three age-appropriate, non-statutory Sex Education lessons as part of the SCARF Growing and Changing unit.
These lessons provide pupils with appropriate information to help them understand aspects of human reproduction and prepare for the transition to secondary school. The content is taught sensitively and in accordance with our RHSE policy.
Parents and carers have the right to request that their child is withdrawn from these non-statutory Sex Education lessons. Parents and carers wishing to exercise this right should contact the academy to discuss this with the Head of Academy or a member of the senior leadership team.
Parents and carers cannot withdraw their child from statutory Relationships Education, Health Education or the statutory elements of the National Curriculum for Science.
