Welcome to our Year 6 class page

Here you will find all the information you need about our school day, see some samples of the amazing work we produce, the weekly homework and spellings set and our fantastic weekly Moorcroft Marvels.

Some important things to start us off this Year...

  • Our PE day is Wednesday. Pupils are to come into school on those days in their PE kits (plain black joggers or shorts, and a plain white T-shirt please).
  • Reading books will be changed as and when required.
  • Spellings will be handed out every Friday and then tested on the following Friday. Children will bring their scores home with them.
  • Homework will be given out every Friday and will be due back by the following Thursday latest.

Don’t forget, should you have any questions about anything to do with your child’s education, you can speak to us on the door at the start and the end of each day or via the Class Dojo messenger.

Curriculum

How can we live more sustainably?

Our curriculum topic this term focuses on the importance of living sustainably. To do this we will be differentiating between renewable and non-renewable energy sources, and the advantages and disadvantage of each of these. We will also investigate one type of renewable energy, and with digital mapping, consider a suitable location for it. We will then introduce the concept of food miles, and the positives and negatives of importing food from other countries. We will look at intensive farming, why it is done and the environmental impacts of it. Finally, we will look at the cause and effect of food waste and suggest ways to minimise it.

Science

Classifying Organisms

In this unit, we will look at ways of grouping organisms according to their characteristics and explore ways of distinguishing between organisms that have similar characteristics.

We will also classify plants according to their characteristics, noting similarities and differences. We will also find out about the Scientist Carl Linnaeus and his classification system, and explore what micro-organisms are and how they can be grouped.
