Welcome to our Year 5 class page

Here you will find all the information you need about our school day, see some samples of the amazing work we produce, the weekly  spellings sets and hear about our fantastic weekly award winners.

Some important things for this year...

  • Our PE day is Thursday. Pupils are to come into school on that day in their PE kits (black joggers/shorts, a white T-shirt, black hoodie and trainers)
  • All earrings need taking out for the PE lesson or tape to be supplied and put on by children.
  • Reading books and records need to be in school every day.
  • Children will be heard reading 3 times per week.
  • Spellings will be handed out every Friday and then tested on the following Friday.
  • Homework will be given out every Friday and will be due back by the following Thursday latest.

Should you have any questions about anything to do with your child’s education, you can speak to myself on the door at the start and the end of each day or via the Class Dojo.

Curriculum Topics

Autumn 1

Our Work

English

Each half term we focus on a different chapter book which we read in Guided Reading and in our writing sessions. In Autumn 1, we read the book, 'I am Rebel'. In Autumn 2, we are reading, 'Oranges in No Man's Land'.

We will focus on a different writing outcome each week, related to the chapters we have read in the book. Examples include; a balanced argument, a retell, a setting description and a letter. Within these lessons, we focus on different skill elements that will then be evident within our work during each lesson.

On a Friday, we then complete a STAR write will will highlight our learning and demonstrate the key skills we have learnt that week in a style of writing that relates to our book.

Maths

In Maths, we follow a spiralised curriculum which allows children to revisit and build on the foundations of each topic.

We encourage the use of a concrete (Build it), pictorial (Draw it)  and abstract (Solve it) approach which allows children to use manipulatives to deepen their understanding allowing them to move on to pictorial representations before finishing with the skills to solve written calculations.

So far, we have covered units such as place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and fractions. We have also been working with numbers up to 1,000,000!

Reading

In class, we are reading 'Glassborn' by Peter Bunzl. We read this book daily in our story time sessions and children follow along.

In Guided Reading, we follow the story, 'Oranges in No Man's Land'. We answer questions related to our reciprocal reading strands; predict, clarify, question and summarise to help us gain a better understanding of the text and the characters.

Science

Autumn 1

In Science, we are learning about the life cycles of living things. This includes focusing on how plants and humans reproduce and the differences between these processes. We have also focused on the scientist, David Attenborough and explored his work and why he is a significant individual in this field.

Autumn 2

In Science, we are learning about the properties and changes of materials. This includes focusing on solids, liquids and gasses and observing how materials change over time and also their properties

Curriculum

Our curriculum lessons consist of both Geography and History objectives. Our current unit, 'Natural Disasters' mainly covers geography objectives from the national curriculum.

Within lessons, we immerse the children in a rich geography and history curriculum that allows them to explore a range of skills with the help  of our mascots George the geographer and Hilda the historian.

Termly units of work enable the children to grasp a deeper understanding of each topic and ensure they have excellent knowledge on how to answer their big question.
